In-House Laboratory/Diagnostics
Caring for your pet has come a long ways since our founding in 1948 – especially in our ability to diagnose problems not readily seen during the physical exam. Your pet can now receive many of the same lab work and diagnostic tests that are available at a human hospital here. Lab work and diagnostic tests complement the physical exam and determine how your pet’s body is functioning. Our goal is early detection of a problem while it is still treatable.
In-House Lab and Diagnostic Equipment allow faster treatments
Since many of the tests we perform are done on our equipment, the medical team can get fast results. Fast results help our medical team make quicker diagnoses and therefore, a quicker treatment plan can be developed. Fast test results are especially helpful for getting your loved one on the road to recovery if your pet is sick or injured.
Sometimes your pet will receive multiple tests to help our medical team. Consider each test being like a part of a puzzle, where each piece is needed to complete the picture.
Common Lab & Diagnostic Tests
Here are some of the common lab tests and diagnostic tests we perform “In-House”:
A. Bloodwork gives our medical team a “window in to the body” to look at both the blood and the functioning of the internal organs. It can tell us if your pet has been infected with certain diseases, such as, heartworm, feline leukemia, and parvovirus. It is also used to regulate insulin or thyroid medications.
B. Urine Tests can also be used for a variety of reasons, including detecting urinary tract disorders, kidney stones, and dehydration. It can also be used to determine if your pet has kidney problems or may be suggestive of diabetes.
C. Fecal Tests are used to detect parasitic eggs and bacteria. We recommend that your pet get their stool tested twice a year.
D. Radiology allows us to take a picture of your pet’s insides. We have two different X-Ray machines, a standard unit and a dental x-ray. After interpretation by our doctors, regular x-rays are sent to a board-certified veterinary radiologist for interpretation (Vet-Rad.
E. EKG – The EKG, or Electrocardiogram, monitors the electrical activity of the heart. It can help determine the reason for irregular heartbeats and abnormal heart sounds, and determine heart dysfunction in pets that have no external signs of heart disease.
F. Blood Pressure - Elevated blood pressure is a very serious complication of heart and kidney disease. Heart disease, kidney disease, anesthesia, position of your pet, fluid administration and fluid losses can all affect your pet's blood pressure. Blood pressure monitors can also be used to monitor your pet's blood pressure while your pet is under anesthesia.
G. Eye Tests – We can do a variety of eye tests to determine if your pet has scratched his or her eye, has glaucoma, or has problems with the tear ducts.
