Pocket Pets

Is your loved one a furry, four-legged pocket pet? Your rabbit, ferret, guinea pig, hamster, gerbil, rat, mouse, or chinchilla is welcome here. We provide both medical and surgical care for your pocket pet. We've even done a hysterectomy on a mouse!

You will receive handouts about your pet, which can help you take care of your little one. Here are some interesting facts about the various pocket pets we see. See When to visit the vet for recommendations on when to call us.

Rabbits

  • Average lifespan 5-10 years old
  • Can be litterbox trained
  • Do not require vaccinations
  • May need periodic teeth trimming
  • We recommend your rabbit be neutered/spayed which will protect your
        pet in the long-term from diseases and unwanted behavior

  • Ferrets

  • Carnivores of family Mustelid, related to skunks, otters, weasels, mink.
  • Originally, used for vermin control and hunting rabbits in Europe and Asia
  • Ferrets are spayed/neutered as kits (4-6 weeks) before becoming pets
  • Lifespan 5-7 years
  • Highly susceptible to Canine Distemper and heartworm disease
  • Do not use over the counter flea products

  • Guinea Pigs (cavy)

  • Domesticated rodent, originally found in the South American wild
  • Three basic breeds

  •     - English cavy has shorthair
        - Abyssinian cavy has short rough hair formed in whirls or rosettes
        - Peruvian cavy has long hair
  • Lifespan up to 9 years old

  • Hamster

  • Rodent originally introduced into United States for research purposes

  • Lifespan 18-24 months

  • Can be aggressive and bite

  • May hibernate

  • Gerbil

  • part of Rodent family, originally found in the desert

  • low water requirements


  • Mice/Rats

  • member of Rodent family

  • may have red tears

  •  

    Chinchilla

  • member of rodent family

  • need multi-level cage
