Laser Surgery

A safe alternative to traditional surgery.

When you hear laser surgery, you may have the mental images of the “Star Wars’ Light Saber”, 3 to 4 feet long and able to cut through anything. In reality our veterinary laser, while just as cool as a light saber, is made specifically for making small, shallow cuts, while cauterizing/sealing soft tissue. Big Creek Pet Hospital was one of the first veterinary hospitals in Cleveland, OH to offer laser surgery about 20 years ago. We have done hundreds of veterinary laser surgery procedures for dogs, cats, and even some pocket pets.

Benefits of Laser Surgery

The major benefits of laser surgery are due to the cauterizing/sealing effects. Some of the benefits for veterinary laser surgery include the following:

  • Less bleeding – as small blood vessels are sealed
  • Less pain – as small nerve endings are also sealed
  • Less swelling – after surgery due to lymphatic vessels being sealed
  • Reduced risk of infection – kills bacteria in the path of the laser, producing a sterilizing effect
  • Quicker recovery from most surgeries

 Drawbacks of Laser Surgery

While there are significant benefits to using a laser for your pet’s surgery, our veterinarians will evaluate the procedure and determine if it is best for your pet. Some drawbacks of laser surgery include the following:

  • Depending on the procedure, laser surgery can take more time (which means more time your pet is under anesthesia)
  • Some elective surgeries can be more expensive with the laser; in these cases, the positive effects of the laser may be accomplished by other methods
  • Can slow skin healing
